NFL 2013 TABRankings: Week 5

Well, it’s down to just three undefeated teams in the league, and according to the TABRankings, those teams truly earned their record. At this point, there is little question as to how the top three should go. The Broncos deserve the top spot, the Saints don’t follow far behind them and the Chiefs are the third-ranked still looking to sharpen their teeth offensively.

Meanwhile, there are also three 4-1 teams, and they follow suit by holding the next three spots. The rankings believe the Colts’ win over the Seahawks was legit, as they hold the fourth and fifth spots, respectively. Meanwhile, for all that one can be concerned about with the Patriots, they still rank high up the list at sixth. We’re not writing off this team.

Beyond that, we’re seeing some things return to normal in the NFC. The 49ers and Packers both make big leaps back to the top 12. As for the Falcons, they might need some time to get back to where they’re used to being. The 1-4 start is quite rough for them.

Speaking of the Falcons, they lost at home on Monday Night Football to the Jets. With a magnificent performance by Geno Smith, the Jets now own a 3-2 record. However, the rankings don’t seem to buy Gang Green. This relates to the team’s terrible -9 turnover margin and their poor passing numbers. They and the Cardinals are the lone winning teams who rank in the league’s bottom half.

Now to the rankings. Remember, the formula for the 2013 TABRankings looks like so:

The TABRankings formula:
(Win Pct x 2)+(Pyth Pct)+(Div Pct x 0.5)+(Qual Pct x 0.5)+(3rd/4th Down Diff x 2.25)+(TO Margin x 3)-(FK Diff x 0.75)+(Sack Diff x 0.75)+(Time Ahead Avg x 1.2)+(Time Ahead Big Avg x 1.5)+(Real Quarterback Rating Diff x 1.25)+(Relative Pts Avg x 1.8)

Now that we have our RAW TABR set up, we need to add in schedule adjustments to get our Total TABR. Remember, the adjustments are made from totals relative to the league average. They account for the strength of schedule for each team via the rankings.

The TABRankings opponent adjustment for Week 5:
(Gross Opponent TABR / Games Played) – League Average TABR
NOTE: The multiple will be determined to be a number X near to the variable that fits the equation:
(1/6) * TABR IQR = Y * Adjustment IQR. For this week, the multiple was determined to be 0.35.

With now all that put together, the results for Week 5 are available below. Make sure to check back in the upcoming weeks for the newest installments of the TABRankings . We will be publishing these results weekly!
